From the humble golf links of Greece, NY, Jeff Sluman became one of the most consistent golf professionals on the PGA Tour. As a child, Jeff excelled in bowling rather than golf. Due to frigid Upstate New York weather, Sluman only played the sport of golf for 3-4 months out of the year.
After graduating high school, Jeff Sluman’s path to golf prominence was unique.
Jeff competed for Monroe Community College at the Junior College National Championships. Sluman was acknowledged as a 2nd Team All-American. Although his impressivel showcase, only Tennessee Tech extended him a scholarship. For the first time is his life, Jeff was given the opportunity to practice and elevate in his golf game year round. Unfortunately after one brief year, Tennessee Tech announced the cancellation of their golf team. At this point, Sluman’s connected with a golf friend at Florida State University. Jeff hopped on a plane to Tallahassee, Florida to negotiate with the golf coach at the time. Jeff enrolled at Florida State and began competition after sitting one year due to NCAA transfer rules.
In 1980, Jeff Sluman realized his golf potential and turned professional. Typically, a golfer’s most productive years span between the age of 21-35. Jeff’s only win on tour during his prime was the at the in Edmond, Oklahoma. Not until his 40th birthday did Sluman start consistently earning PGA victories.
